Women’s basketball sweep Briercrest; men remain perfect
Women
In three weeks, the Trojans women’s basketball team have shot themselves to the top of the ACAC women’s basketball South Division standings.
Currently on a four-game winning streak heading into the weekend, the Trojans took on Briercrest College in back-to-back road games.
Game one took place Friday, Feb. 13, in Caronport, Sask.
The Trojans came out flying in the first quarter with a 45-26 lead.
With no scoring from either team in the second quarter, the Trojans secured an 81-62 win.
Kitawna Sparks led the Trojans’ offence with a 19-point, 11-rebound double-double.
On Saturday, the teams met again in Caronport.
The Trojans once again led at halftime, 37-31.
Putting up 28 points in the third quarter, the Trojans’ offence continued to dominate, pulling out an 83-68 win.
The Trojans’ offence showed its depth in the Saturday win, with Ava Kearl leading all scorers with 23 points, while Sparks recorded an 18-point, 10-rebound double-double.
With the two wins over Briercrest, the Trojans now sit in first place in the ACAC women’s basketball South Division standings with a 12-7 record.
Next for the Trojans are the final two games of the regular season against Olds College on Friday, Feb. 20, at 6 p.m. in Olds and Saturday at 6 p.m. at the SAIT Bubble in Calgary.
Men
The Trojans men’s basketball team also took on Briercrest in Caronport on Friday and Saturday night.
Briercrest came out strong at home and led 20-12 at the end of the first quarter.
At halftime, Briercrest led 37-31 over the league’s top team.
The Trojans’ offence outscored Briercrest 24-19 in the third quarter and 30-19 in the fourth to win 85-75.
Four of the five Trojans starters scored more than 10 points on the night to flex to Trojans’ offensive depth.
Killian Yopa had 15 points, Logan Bennett had 18, Cam Carter had a 19-point, 10-rebound double-double and Marcus Masters had a game-leading 24 points.
The following day, the Trojans were once again behind at halftime, with Briercrest taking a 37-36 lead after two quarters.
For the second game in a row, the Trojans mounted a second-half comeback, winning 86-78 to keep their undefeated season alive.
Masters once again led all scorers with 24 points.
With the back-to-back wins over Briercrest, the Trojans remain in first place in the ACAC men’s basketball South Division standings with a 19-0 record.
Next for the Trojans are the final two games of the regular season against Olds College on Friday, Feb. 20, at 8 p.m. in Olds and Saturday at 8 p.m. at the SAIT Bubble.
Men’s hockey drop two straight to Ooks
This past weekend, the Trojans men’s hockey team played back-to-back games against provincial rival NAIT Ooks.
Game one took place Friday, Feb. 13, in Edmonton.
After a scoreless first period, Ty Whitford added a goal for the Ooks and Travis Hensrud added a goal for the Trojans to make it 1-1 after the second period.
Eight minutes into the third period, Sean Mitchell scored to put the Ooks up 2-1.
Just over one minute later, Trojans forward Brett Butz tied the game at 2-2.
Both teams added goals later in the period to send the game to overtime tied 3-3.
Even Arnold scored 15 seconds into overtime to give the Ooks a 4-3 win.
The following day, the teams met again in Edmonton.
The Ooks jumped out to a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes on a goal by Tyler Blocha.
Decker Mujcin and Dylan Leslie added goals for the Ooks in the second period to make it 3-0.
Toward the end of the period, Trojans veteran Austin Reschny pulled a goal back on the power play.
With one second remaining in the third period, Cale Lyons made it 4-1 for the Ooks to win their second game in as many days.
With the two losses to the Ooks, the Trojans remain in second place in the ACAC men’s hockey South Division standings with a 15-7 record.
Next for the Trojans are back-to-back games against the league-leading Red Deer Polytechnic Kings on Friday, Feb. 20, at 6:45 p.m. at WinSport Arena in Calgary and Saturday at 7 p.m. in Red Deer.
Women’s volleyball drop two straight; men extend losing streak
Women
The Trojans women’s volleyball team took on Briercrest Collegeon Friday, Feb. 13, and Saturday, Feb. 14. Both games took place at the SAIT Bubble in Calgary.
Friday night saw the teams split the opening two sets, with Briercrest winning the first set 26-24 and the Trojans winning the second set 25-17.
The Trojans took the third set 25-21 to take a 2-1 lead.
Briercrest responded with a 25-15 win to force a fifth set.
The away side came away with the 15-9 victory to win the match 3-2.
Arewyn Rae led the Trojans’ offence in kills on the night with 15.
The following day, the teams met again at the SAIT Bubble.
For the second night in a row, the teams split the opening sets, with Briercrest winning the first set 25-22 and the Trojans winning the second set 25-20.
Briercrest went on to win two straight sets, 25-14 and 25-19, to win the match 3-1.
With the two losses to Briercrest, the Trojans women’s volleyball team sit in third place in the ACAC women’s volleyball South Division standings with a 9-8 record.
Next for the Trojans are the final two matches of the regular season against Olds College on Friday, Feb. 20, at 6 p.m. at Rally Pointe in Calgary and Saturday, Feb. 21, at 6 p.m. in Olds.
Men
After dropping two straight games last weekend to Ambrose, the Trojans men’s volleyball team looked to get back on track against league-leading Briercrest.
The Trojans hosted Briercrest on Friday, Feb. 13, and Saturday, Feb. 14, at the SAIT Bubble.
The No. 1-ranked Briercrest came out strong Friday night, winning the match in straight sets, 25-23, 25-12 and 25-18.
On Saturday, Briercrest won two straight sets, 25-14 and 25-19, to jump out to a 2-0 lead.
The Trojans responded with a 25-23 win in the third set.
Briercrest proved too much for the home side, taking the fourth set 25-19 to win the match 3-1.
With the back-to-back losses to Briercrest, the Trojans men’s volleyball team remain in last place in the ACAC men’s volleyball standings with a 3-14 record.
Next for the Trojans are the final two matches of the regular season against Olds College on Friday, Feb. 20, at 8 p.m. at Rally Pointe in Calgary and Saturday, Feb. 21, at 8 p.m. in Olds.
Trojans impress at second ACAC indoor track meet
On Saturday, Feb. 14, Red Deer Polytechnic hosted the second ACAC Running Room Grand Prix.
Trojans veteran runner Nathan Woyessa finished first in the men’s 1,000 metres with a time of 2:35.59.
The Trojans’ men’s 4x200-metre team finished fourth with a time of 1:42.49. The team consisted of Myles Sonom, Daniel Olufowobi, Benedict Alfonso and Odly Jean.
Alexai Fadeyiw captured first place in the men’s 600 metres with a time of 1:25.06.
Fadeyiw, Willem Grant, Brock Bishop and Woyessa finished fourth in the men’s 4x400 metres with a time of 3:51.30.
The next ACAC Running Room Grand Prix takes place Saturday, Feb. 26, hosted by Lethbridge Polytechnic.
Men’s rugby clash with provincial rivals in Edmonton
From Feb. 15-16, the Trojans men’s rugby team competed in the 7s tournament hosted by the University of Alberta at Foote Field in Edmonton.
On Sunday, the Trojans lost 17-0 to University of Alberta Green and lost 49-14 later in the day to the University of Saskatchewan Huskies.
Monday saw the Trojans narrowly lose 35-24 to the University of Regina Cougars.
To wrap up the tournament, the Trojans defeated University of Alberta Gold 21-17 to finish with a 1-3 record.
